Bloody Monday killing takes place.
August 4, 1806
Charles Austin is shot and killed by attorney Thomas Selfridge in the middle of State Street at the corner of Congress Street. The incident occurs after the teen-aged Austin, armed with a hickory cane, challenged Selfridge to a fight for insulting Austin’s father Benjamin Austin, the publisher of the Republican Independent Chronicle newspaper, which had published critical remarks about the Federalist Selfridge. The dispute also had to do with payment of a bill. Selfridge is subsequently charged with manslaughter, but found not guilty on December 25, 1806.
